The Great Wall was not just a defensive barrier — it was the world’s largest communication network. Its watchtower system could transmit messages across 6,000 kilometers in under 24 hours, a feat not matched until the telegraph.

Smoke by Day, Fire by Night

The system was elegant in its simplicity. During daylight hours, watchtower guards burned damp wolf dung to produce thick vertical smoke columns visible for kilometers. At night, they lit beacon fires. The number of smoke columns or fires indicated the size of the attacking force.

The Signal Code

The Ming Dynasty established a precise signal code:

  • 1 smoke/fire: Small raiding party (under 100)
  • 2 smokes/fires: Medium attack (100-500)
  • 3 smokes/fires: Large invasion (500-1,000)
  • 4 smokes/fires: Major offensive (1,000+)

Speed of the Dragon

Historical records show that a signal sent from Jiayuguan in the west could reach Beijing in approximately 24 hours — a distance of over 1,500 kilometers. This was achieved through a relay system of approximately 7,000 watchtowers, each staffed by 5-10 soldiers who maintained constant vigilance.

False Alarms and Punishment

False alarms were punished severely — entire families of soldiers who lit unauthorized beacons could be executed. This strict discipline ensured the system’s reliability and prevented alarm fatigue among responding forces.
